Re: ATM spherometer philosophy

I mistrust a micrometer thread even more than I do a good dial indicator.
the micrometer head twists itself into the glass and any entrapped material
does a job on the fine surface of the glass wether it be fine ground or
polished. I constantly check and recheck my readings and have developed a
feel so that I constantly read my dial indicators to a fringe. If much work
is done at or near one reading, the delicate rack and pinion gear set gets
worn out. I then choose another zero value to use and wear out. After a
while, the device must be repaired and I have developed a good working
relationship with the folks at Starrett.
