RE: ATM Re: Stainless Steel

A follow ups on the tailgate ala Kriege.

I went to hardware stores looked for stainless steel but the price is
TOO expensive.
So, I decided to make the tailgate from plywood, but I changed my mind
because the cell would be too thick. And then a couple of days ago I
remember there's a welder across the street of my house, yes it's right
there in front of my house. I didn't remember about this workshop, so
stupid!!!

I went there brought a full scale drawing of the tailgate design and
asked the machinist to make it for me. The cost was surprising, Rp
50,000 or in US dollar it's US$ 5 (five dollar) including the materials.
It's much cheaper than I thought it would be! So I asked him to work on
it. I'll see the result when I get home tonight.
One thing I regret is that I forgot to ask Richard's help to design the
floatation system.

Now I'm thinking about going there again to make the side bearings. In
David Kriege's book, the bearings are made of either a plywood or
aluminum casting.

Question:
Is there any disadvantage of using steel as a material for the side
bearings?

Hey, maybe I can start steel tailgate business now:-)
