Dwight,

Neither is all that toxic.  However, Ce is very difficult to seperate from
the rest of the Lanthanum group which are both toxic and radioactive.

Also, ZrO2, while leaving a very nice finish, is expensive in optical grade
and is very SLOW as a polishing agent.  Ideally one would use a high grade
of CeO for the majority of the work then, if you must, use ZrO2 to finish.
