I'd go for the convex face. 

I did this with a 8" tool recently and it worked out great. 

Get a disk of iron of some sort. There's lots of things that will work. 

* Frying pan
* Small iron disk for weight lifting
* Plumbing parts (flange $2.50 at Eagle) etc. 

Work with the tool on top (TOT) and get some 60 grit and go at it. I
would suspect that you could get it hogged out in 2-4 hours doing it
this way. Then make a POP tile tool etc.
