It only feels smoother because the polishing compound is keeping the
mirror and tool separated. Not much polishing action is going on. What
you really want is a consistant drag feeling to the lap/mirror almost
to the point of screeching (some like to hear the screech). The lap
has a fine layer of imbeded polishing compound in it's surface and it
is this that does the polishing, not all the extra polishing compound.
