I had the same problem. I was using #400 and saw some pits. I kept on
griding using #400 but the pits didn't go away. Then someone from the
list told me that it's possible that I tried to remove pits caused by
#400 with abbrasives #400.
If I were you, I would use #500 for, say, 2 more wets, if the pits
remain then chances are the pits are caused by #500. So I would move on
to finer grade. Go to finer grade instead of coarser.

I marked the pits using a permanent marker. But, I didn't mark the back
of the mirror.
I marked the pits right on the pits so if the marks are gone, then I
know that the pits are also gone. Just like Sharpie Test, but I didn't
draw lines, instead I simply touched the pits with the tip of the
marker, just to leave marks.
