Thanks to all on the list who responded with ideas, the
most frequent suggestion was 'why bother when you can get
an old 386/486 for less than a remote com setup would
cost'. Others ranged from using Linux or Ethernet to 
a turnkey package from Cybex (www.cybex.com) which
converts the monitor/keyboard/mouse data to a digital
stream that can be transmitted up to 600' over a twisted
wire pair, with plug in/out boxes at both ends. Price
of this >> an old PC, though.

I've decided to resurrect my old 386-33 PC with a
bad hard disk & use it in the obs, I'll just have 
to fugure out a way to keep it warm in the winter
like put the CPU box in an isulated heated case
or something.

BTW for those with a good sky & SSE horizon, comet
H-B is visible again at az 150 elev 10 1h before
sunrise, at +6 mag with 1 deg wide fan shaped tail.
This comet has *got* to set a record for longevity..
