Kyle,

No problem threading your plywood mounting rings for screws so long as they 
are thick enough. I mounted an 80mm F6.3 Brandon as a finder for my 18" dob 
using a purpose built mount. The plywood rings were 3/4 inch in thickness. 
I tapped the rings for nylon 1/4 X 20  screws available from Home Depot 
here in the southeast. The mount hasn't failed in two years of service.
