I have cut off that stalk (cast light metal) and drilled and threaded a
hole for a locking screw, and I tighten it to lock in place against the
flange that it normally slides over. On the right half there is a focuser
for the eyepiece, but on the left you will have to adjust it for your eye
and leave it, no great limitation. Another way is to put PVC tape on the
flange, thick enough for a snug fit (or combine for best stability).
BTW the center holes in the stalks, where the central hinge used to be, I
use for coarse sighting - particularly convenient near zenith.
Don't forget a dewcap at the objective end.
I have some JPEGs of my finder mount, if you (or anyone else) can receive
them, just tell me.
