Why are you making your pitch lap on the grinding tool?  You should make
a pitch lap foundation of dental stone after you are finished with grit
#220.  That way, if there is a bad scratch, you can go back to grinding
without taking apart your pitch lap.

Because 6 years ago when I started this that was the practice, I have since
learned better. And yes I do have to go back to fine grinding.  Mistakes are
the best teacher.

BTW, can Hydrocal plaster be used instead of dental stone??  I've got quite a
bit stored away from Model Railroading.
