Once you chip off all the old pitch, you can flatten the blank on any large
hard flat surface using rough grit. We use a large steel plate and #46/70
grit. You could also use another blank, a slab of concrete, or even the
driveway. Just be sure to bevel the edge so that you don't chip off hunks
of glass around the edge.
