ATM Upgrading the drive system on a Tele Vue Systems mount

A semi-ATM question:

I have a Tele Vue Systems Mount for my Genesis. It is a great mount,
but I would like to upgrade the drive system.

I currently have the RA drive that Tele Vue sells for it. It has
just one tracking rate (sidereal), a reverse button, a pause button,
and a button to increase the drive rate by about a factor of 8. The
tracking itself is fine, but I find it frustrating to use this to
move with around in conjunction with the manual dec slow motion
control.

What I would like is to get dual-axis control on a single paddle with
something like up to 2 degree/second slewing. I am not aware of any
commercial upgrade that will do this (please enlighten me if you do)
so I was wondering if it is feasible to build it myself with stepper
motors. The housing on the RA drive indicates the gearing is 180:1.
The Dec axis is similarly geared I believe.

I am pretty ignorant about electronics in general and stepper motors
in particular. Is it feasible to mount some steppers and then adapt
a commercial paddle to drive them? I think I have some friends that
could help me out with the electronics once I figure out what I need.

Any advice appreciated.
