The wire would weigh far more than the telescope..and how would you
deploy it?

Reminds me of early days on Apollo where we were considering ways to
communicate with the crew while they were farside - one proposal we
received was to soft-land relay transmitters at intervals on the 
farside and deploy km-long antennas on balloons...:>}
