Yes, the use of India ink was previously known, but if you would take
the time and trouble to read the actual patent, you would see that
there is a lot more involved, including the exact mix of the polising
compund. It looks like a lot of work (paid for by us taxpayers, of
course) went into this.

Hmmm... Using India Ink for polishing aluminum. Who wouldda thought.
Seems to me I was reading about that in the old 3 book ATM series
about 35 years ago and reported such several years ago on the ATM
List. Amazing that you can just wait a couple years and "Discover and
Patent" a new technology that is ages old.
I bet that if you did a search under my name or the title of
"polishing aluminum mirror" you'd be able to verify this one. If I
wasn't so lazy, I'd do it.
