That was a nice post!  I only point out one thing,
FWIW, and it is that at decent altitude and dark skies
(OSP), when I first gathered up the Orion Nebulae in
my carefully made and optimized 8" at 4:30 in the
morning, besides the audible sound of my jaw dropping,
there was color.  Green, yes, and red as well.  I
didn't know you weren't /supposed/ to be able to see
it at that aperture, with only the eye and a fine
mirror to feed it.
