Hi Bill,
Consider using the spider as 1/2 the circuit. Your cat5 cable wire
should work for the other half (or even both legs of the circuit), since
it is less than 1/10 ohm per foot. You could run your #18 from the
controller to the spider assy, then use the short length of small wire.
I made the center piece of my spider out of insulating material, and use
two legs of the spider to carry the juice to the secondary....works good.
So, a quick "yay" to using your tiny wire the length of the spider arms,
then use heavier wire from the top of the scope to the controller.
