Several ways to skin that cat.
If you're used to working with and building electronics, the
LM7806 in one of it's variations is the ticket.  Otherwise, it
may be better to grab a Radio Shack car coltage reducer which
will output any of several different voltages depending upon the
position of the switch on the front of it.  There are also fixed
voltage versions of it or other types of convertors that are used
for cell phones, CD players and so forth. Find the right one and
you're in like flint.
If you're really good with electronics, there are all kinds of
switching regulators that will get you up to better than ninety
percent current conversion efficiency.  But that is another whole
level of complexity!
