An LM7806C and two capacitors will set you back about $5, add another 2$ 
for a box to stick it in and you are done. Go for the steel cased 
version and you should be safe. It will handle 1 amp at 6V, although if 
you are pulling 1 Amp full time (which I doubt) the regulator will need 
heatsinking. Do a google search on the part number and you should get 
the full spec sheet. It is not the most elegant of solutions or the most 
efficient power wise, but it is simple and fairly low cost.
