Dark means no light, perfect absorption and zero transmission.

What pros do: Any of a variety of things, often not really the
best choice from optics point of view, but maybe very efficient
from point of view of mass production and assembly lines. My
personal preference when quality if issue is a large surface
area using a material with high absorbance at the wavelength(s) of
interest. for instance baffles painted with a very coarse black
paint
