You could make the backing fairly stiff out of carbon fiber and epoxy. 
A ribbed, or honeycombed, or egg crate structure could be made very
stiff compared to the weight we need to support.  The only problem is
the cost of the carbon fiber.

Of course, you could always go with cast aluminum with resilient pads
doing the supporting.  The amount of differential expansion should be
able to be taken up by the pads.
