I like:

"How to Build a Telescope" by Berry - multiple designs and easy to 
follow plans.  This book has inspired a lot of ATMers over the years, 
it's easy to scale up and modify their plans if you want something bigger.

"The Backyard Astronomers Guide" by Dickinson and Dyer, a great 
introduction to space for us non-science guys.

"Contact" by Sagan - Hey, if they come, it it just might be like Carl 
tells it...
