Short answer, yes, the pitch has to go somewhere, so the channels are still
needed.
For this size tool roughly two channels perpendicular to each other (like
this #) somewhat off centre will work very well. Oh yeah, if you can get one
of those bags that garlic comes in slit it open and use it to micro facet
the lap, it will make for a smoother polish.
BTW where in Australia are you? I'm in QLD...

Hi guys I'm making a secondary mirror for a classical cassegrain and I would
like to know if you still need to put in grid lines on the pitch lap and if
so what sizes. The mirror is 10cm diameter. I have already poured the pitch
onto a plaster tool. I'm down to my last powder and will be ready to start
polishing in the next few days. Any help would be appreciated. thanks.
