I'm not good enough to model this situation, but it looks interesting.
1. The second set of wires, even if perfectly aligned are not really in
complete shadow, even for an on axis source, because diffraction from
the first set throws light onto the second which will then rediffract
that light.
2. For sources (stars) even a little off center, the second set of
wires are not in shadow, even assuming ray optics instead of wave.
3. Getting rid of the thermal boundary layer undoubtedly improves the
images way more than the extra diffraction hurts.
