Yep, I understand the concept.  Unfortunately, reality has this
problem of setting in and making hash of all the good intentions.
The pad lap is a ring lap (took the center pads off of it) and
the edge pads are the only ones on there.  They do go a bit
further in than the outer 1/3 section but not all that badly.  I
also expected a small lap to act just like the ring lap would but
only slower.
