The tiles that I've been using are about 1/4" thick and are on a
1" spacing.
You actually don't use that much of the thickness of the tiles
because you first dig the hole and make it sort of spherical
before you make the tool.  I've always done the tile in the tool
method as it goes a lot faster than using epoxy or something else
to put the tiles on.  I also use the mat without removing the
little bits of RTV that space the mat out.  This allows for the
stone to go between the tiles and hold them better.
For float glass, I'd not bother to grind the backside as the
reason for this is more to gain a flat back.
