Maybe I should have prefaced my remarks with the also needed
desire for ease of handling and making the usrfaces.  I'll agree
that glass isn't the perfect material as it does have that nasty
brittleness but that isn't critical.
Berillium is nice and light indeed but you don't want to breathe
the dust at all as it is a nasty poision to the body, way much
more than glass dust would ever be!  Towards tha end, I'll leave
that metal to the experts that can spend the large amount of
money to do the machining of it.
Carbon fiber epoxy mirrors are in a somewhat different problem
area as they take a lot of expertise to make and some complex
equipment to cure the epoxy in a manner which is usable for the
telescope optics.  In addition, you need to make a convex mold
for the optical surfaee which is going to be harder than the
concave surface of a typical mirror.
