Mirrors can be made from other materials if so desired.  The
problem with a lot of materials is that they don't like to take a
high polish that is needed for the job.  Next is that many
materials have a high temp expansion coeeficient wich makes a big
problem when it comes to using that particular material as a
mirror.  It ends up that glass has all of the necessary
requirements to make a good base for a reflecting surface.
