One variety that I fancy is using thin plywood to make a square
cross-section tube. The flat sides resist movement well - I make a "diagonal
cage", a square frame to fasten the trunnions to, and a square mirror cell.
This is light and fairly easy to use - and the material can be 1/8" or
thinner (since this is essentially a "closed" box - the rocker box needs vey
much sturdier material since it isn't - but a light OTA helps).

This would be useful for any size where a sonotube might be contemplated -
i.e. up to some 10".
