Or use the tile in plaster method as outlined at
http://www.gotgrit.com/make_tool1.php?osCsid=5e1d416e55dafaf477b6ecf152558513
(not quite sure what all that stuff after the ? is, but Tom is a good
guy, so I'm not worried about it.)
This method saves the mess, time and expense of glue and gives a durable
tool. The process is actually very quick and easy. I recommend the
dental stone because it is strong and water resistant. Buy it from Tom,
or get it locally from a dental supply firm. Since dentists are pretty
widespread, so are dental supply firms. Tell them you want a low
expansion, high strength dental stone.
When you mix it, you add the powder to the water, not the other way
round. You want a consistancy that is like very thick sticky mud, the
kind that won't com off your shoes without scraping. I think Tom may
include recommended water amounts with his kits. I think it is similar
for all the dental stone products.
If you want to do one bigger than he sells a kit for, drop him a line
and ask the correct water ratio. Also have him send you his written
instructions for making the tool. They are very clear and helpful. (I
think Richard Schwartz wrote them initially.)
You do have to work fast. The total working time of the dental stone is
not more than 20 minutes. Have everything set up in advance and it goes
easily.
