Delyan Toshev, one thing that you have to remember is that it
wasn't until the '60s that anybody did any electronic calculating
of optical designs.  Before that, everybody did it by hand
calcualtions so approximations were more the rule of the day.
This meant thaa it wasn't possible to easily explore the envelope
of the design to find out what really was reqpired.  the
Paramythioti-Clave design sounds like an early design where the
authoss didn't try to minimize the number of elements (may also
have had a large scope in mind) and the multiple elements were to
get rid of individual aberrations one at a time.  You'd have to
go find the basic parameters they were working at to find out why
they really had so many elements as others have done the basic
job with 2 or 3 elements, often glued together.
