Re: [ATM] Suggestions on a Router?

I thought I'd mention that while routing circles with
a router compass sounds like a pretty easy and
intuitive thing to do, there are some tricks. For
one, plan on making multiple cuts through the
material, starting with a scoring cut to get through
the top veneer. If I am feeling timid I keep each
subsequent pass to 1/8" but sometimes I go a little
deeper when chopping through the interior plies.
You'll get a lot less tearout on the far side if you
firmly attach the workpiece to a backer of plywood and
make the (shallow) last cut penetrating a little into
the backer. Another critical point is that *all*
parts of the workpiece, even the offcuts, need to be
firmly attached to the backer. I use countersunk
nails or screws for this (I prefer nails in the final
piece because I can fill the holes with a toothpick,
making a nearly invisible repair in baltic birch--it
looks like a pin knot).
