For what it's worth, I use the Porter Cable set that
comes with both fixed and plunge bases.  I mounted the
fixed base on a board to use a router compass, and use
the plunge base for free-standing routing.  I feel I
can get greater depth control with the helical "fine
focus" of the fixed base which I like when making
multiple passes with the trammels.  This makes it
easier to make very shallow "scoring" cuts through the
surface veneers to minimize tearout.
