Yep, thin front plates can do a nasty with printthrough of the pattern of
the support.  The solution is to support the backside of the surface while
grinding and polishing to push the unsupported areas to the tool/lap.
Talking with Bob Goff on the subject provided the answer that he apparently
used which was putting a little air pressure to the backside of the surface
to compensate for the problem.
