[ATM] composite mirrors and epoxy handling hazards
Hi All:
I am sorry to learn of Ms Ellen Mackenzie's unfortunate
experience with handling epoxy. In my presentation I emphasized that
safety precautions, such as observing proper procedures, using protective
gear, and reading the MSDS (material safety data sheet) be taken seriously.
Epoxies are not inherently more dangerous or toxic than many household
chemcials such as Lysol, paint thinner, bleach, nail polish, etc. IMHO, all
chemcials should be treated with respect. Likewise for power tools.
A good reference for proper and safe handling of epoxies can be
found at http://www.psfc.mit.edu/esh/epoxy.html.
Should Ms Mackenzie or others wish to explore the fascinating
realm of graphite epoxy mirror making, I would suggest lookig into MGS
epoxy. People who are experienced in the trade and whose opinion I trust
recommend it
highly as a system that is both easy to use and physiologically friendly
(i.e. non allergy causing). I have not tried it myself, though.
Clear skies.
P.C. Chen
