One thing that you haven't realized with a dual axis control of a randomly
aligned scope is that any orientation of the scope without a polar axis of
reasonable accuracy is that the image will rotate as the scope tracks across
the sky.  This will make the whole problem of tracking much worse as you
need to then track two stars to a higher resolution so as to keep the
rotation of the camera taking the image in the correct orientation to the
stars it is seeing.
Basically, you need to have an axis of the scope point towards the polar
axis in order to limit the need for this second requirement.
