I have been experimenting with four quadrant silicon photodiode and image
intensifier for fast and sensitive tracking. UDT Sensors makes a SPOT
series of photodiodes see:
http://www.udt.com/Datasheets/Products/SPOTSeries.pdf
The Silicon diode sensitivity problem (when tracking faint objects) can be
overcome by the addition of an image intensifier in front of the photodiode.
Signal conditioning circuitry is simple and can be analog only with an X and
Y voltage output signals proportional to the centriod of the tracked object
for a stand alone tracker requiring no computer. ADC can be added for
further digital conditioning and control.
