David,
    Have you tried pointing it at the stars, moon
maybe even a planet?
You can see quite a bit with the uncoated mirror at
that size, looking at the leaves on a tree can only
tell you so much, try pointing it upwards and at more
distant objects,I would never coat the thing before
star testing it first.
