Abrasion isn't a crushing action when it has to do
with a softer material, such as metal.  It's a
scraping action.

But the topic drew my eye - why electroplate nickel? 
It's pretty and it's fairly corrosion resistant to
start with, to the point where many tools are nickel
plated.
