A thermite reaction does not involve nickel.  It involves Aluminum and
Fe2O3, essentially rust.  It takes a blow torch even to get that reaction
started.  Nickel overcoats on aluminum mirrors are safe and are used because
the nickel takes the polish, whereas the aluminum will not.  They are safe,
and have never had one explode on me.
