Go wireless.  Each machine needs a wireless card.  They can talk directly to 
each other.  For your 'net connection, you can:

1. make one machine the gateway and use XP or similar sofware to allow 
access to 'net for other machines which go through the gateway machine

2. have all machines talk to a separate router/switch that is your gateway 
to the 'net.
