I realize that intuition plays little role, but my engineering 6th sense 
says that this needs to be investigated.  It's hard to believe that 1mm 
change in position degrades that severely.  It's almost as if the 
degradation is total once the position error > 1-2 mm.  I'd like to know if 
this is due to shear, because intuitively, it seems unlikely that sag would 
be the culprit.
