[ATM] stainless layout
There is something even better than using a pointed punch for establishing
the points on metal triangles/bars/etc where you want holes to be drilled.
My experience has been that you can never really see exactly where the
punch is sitting when you whack it with the mallet. It can shift as you
swing, it's bottom may be flattened or rounded, the blow itself may shift
it, etc. Check out the metal working tools section at your tool store.
There are great little centering bits used with metal lathes. They look
like very small, pointy router bits. They are pointed on both ends and you
can get them in a variety of tip sizes. Pop one of these into your drill
press (and, honest, I wouldn't even think about working wood w/o a drill
press, let alone metal. Wood working is possible w/o but so much easier
with, but metal working... my experience has been that it would be real
easy to break a wrist or lose a finger) and you can make a pilot point for
a drill bit that is as accurate as it's possible for the human eye to see.
One of these did a 27 pt cell in stainless and shows no sign whatever of
dulling, and they cost all of $3 each.
