The question is not whether or not  Dan is a good guy, or if he makes money
doing this.

Better questions are:

Did he answer your emails as quickly once he had your money as he did before
you sent money?

How long did you have to wait (3 months? 9 months? a year?)

If you had a long wait, did he give you an accurate ETA?

If you gave up on waiting, what did it take to get your  money returned?

Did you ever call his phone number and get a message it was disconnected?

How many  times did you have to write to get a response?

Discussions on "he's a good guy," and should he meet the same standards as a
commercial outfit, will just go on and on without any resolution.
