If, indeed horse shoe applies to the long cradle type mount and split
ring applies to the short coupled type of mount, why would the horse
shoe be any better for use in an observatory?

I'd think if you had a concrete floor to work with and a base centered
under the axis the short couple mount would work even better than it
does in mobile situations.  And it would make more space in the
observatory.  What am I missing?
