The need to block a piece of glass is an attempt to get the total polished
surface round more than anything else. When you are doing round discs and
getting them flat, you can work the surface just like any other piece of
glass.
It is known tho that putting a number of blanks together into a much larger
disc will make the majority of the blanks nicely flat across the entire
surace as the "edge" problems don't happen on the ones not at the edge of
the disc - you know, the ol' TDE problems.
