It isn't the material so much as the way that the material is used.  Wood is
a pretty sight to see but it does have it's own particular set of problems
with local strength of the material and bumps.
A good aluminum tube with reinforcements or a truss design will do quite an
excellent job for what you need.
The secret with any design is insuring that the the construction is rigid
enough.  If you are really worried about rigidity, have a mechanical
engineer friend (if you have one) do an analysis of the design and tell you
how solid it is.
