The problem is not the thermal expansion
coefficient, but that the cement between
the layers of glass does not conduct as well
as the glass, so thermal gradients will exist
between the layers & mess up the figure.
I tried this (1/4" plate, 6" dia, 4 layers),
using optical cement. *Dismal* failure...
