ATM 2" hex ceramic tiles

I visited Intermountain Optics recently, and was told by the owner that 2"
hex ceramic tiles are no longer being manufactured.  He purchased many, many
cases to tide him over for a while.
He seemed loathe to switch to square tiles.  He also uses the small round
tiles on occassion, but still prefers the hex.
Can anyone tell me why a hexagonal tile would be preferred to square, for
grinding?  Is there a physical reason, or is this "personal prefferance"
territory?
