No. You might go six inches on a mirror that size. Then you will also have
extra trim allowance, in case the tube ends get deformed during
construction.

You might get many interesting answers on this one, but based on the
impression from your posting this is definitely the easiest way for a tyro.
Put the optics in the assembly and get to know them.
