I think there is no reason to let the plaster cure ON the glass.
Before casting it, wrap the glass in thin plastic foil.

Once you casted the plaster, you should rattle the table to help the
plaster spread evenly. Once it has settled so far that rattling the
table does not move the plaster anymore (ca. 10-15 min for 6"), you
can remove the damm and the tool from the glass and seperate glass and
tool. Since the plaster only gets hot after ca. 15 min. you avoid
surprises like Kevin had.

A positive side effect is that by turning the tool over and let it
settle on its bottom side on an even surface you won't have "rocking
tool" problems later.
